Meet Veslene.  She joined us in 2010 when she was 18 years old.  She has 4 sisters and a brother.

Shortly after she began working with us, both of her parents died from the cholera outbreak leaving her to care for her siblings and her own newborn baby boy.

Lance Pierre

When her son, Lance Pierre, was still a baby, she was able to roll cereal box beads at home.  She would make necklaces, and sell them on consignment.  Once Lance Pierre was old enough to begin school, she came in every day to work on the crochet bracelets and now she is one of the Nannies in our Daycare.   She lives in Clarvil, the little community right behind our artisan house.

Her life has changed so much in the last four years.  She is currently renting a house but has purchased land so that she can build her own.  She cares for her brother and her son and is so proud that she is able to put Lance Pierre in school.   He is 4 years old now and each day at 2:30, she takes a short break to go pick him up and she brings him back to the Daycare.  She stays late to clean and get ready for the next day and he is with her everyday.

When I asked her what job she has liked best at Apparent Project, she told me how much she loved working in the Daycare.  She understands how difficult it was to care for Lance Pierre when he was little.  She didn’t have any help and was just thankful that she was able to roll beads at home and bring him to work occasionally.  She loves helping the new moms and giving them a safe place to bring their babies while they work.

She also said, “I didn’t know how to be a very good mom when my son was born.  Both of my parents died.  It was hard.  Working in the Daycare is teaching me how to be better mom for Lance Pierre.  I am so thankful – I never want it to stop.”

Thank you all for your support of our Daycare program.  Currently we are in need of a few things.  If you will be traveling into Port Au Prince in the future – will you please consider bringing a few items in for us?

We need:

Diapers – Sizes 1-3
