Leave Haiti? Maguy Wants to Stay!

Leave Haiti? Maguy Wants to Stay!

There is currently no elected government in Haiti and hasn’t been since Jovenel Moïse was assassinated in July 2021. At the beginning of 2024, in addition to mounting gang activity, there was also a grèv (strike) that occurred in many areas of the country.

The people are tired of the gang activity, and they want a government who will take care of it. Ariel Henry, the unelected Haitian Prime Minister, promised that there would be an election in the fall of 2023 with a new president taking office in February 2024. Because this did not happen, schools and businesses were closed January 29 through February 7 for the grèv (strike.)

Unfortunately, the people most hurt by the strike were the Haitian citizens. People in Haiti are tired! Many Haitians feel hopeless living in Haiti and are leaving in whatever way they can. The people with jobs had no income, children couldn’t go to school, and families (many who don’t have refrigeration) struggled even more than usual to find food to eat. Schools and businesses have been closed.

Apparent Project was temporarily closed  & currently operates with a limited schedule.

But our staff are committed to the children at the Apparent Project School.

They work for their salary so they can provide for their families. But even more than that, they work at the Apparent Project because it’s a community, a family. And they work at the Apparent Project to change the lives of the kids at our school and to change the direction of Haiti.

Maguy, our lead elementary school teacher, has a passport and visa which gives her the option to leave Haiti and come to the US. But she recently told Pierre, our Apparent Project Director of Schools, that she is not leaving Haiti because of her commitment to her students.

Listen to Pierre as he talks about our staff’s commitment to each other and to the children of the Apparent Project.  https://youtu.be/p5o2yR4laqI

Chaos & oppression in Haiti block opportunities for the poor.

Apparent Project offers the quality education & job skills training needed to help the poor rise up out of poverty and become future leaders of integrity in Haiti.
