Reality… Haiti’s Struggles Increase
Gang Activity. Since the death of Haitian President Jovenel Moïse in 2021, the Haitian people have been victims of war, they’ve been held hostage, and they’ve been denied food, water, medical care, and safety by as many as 200 heavily armed gangs with about half of them in the Port au Prince area.
There are several “groups” of gangs that control large portions of the Port au Prince area. Transportation to Haiti & the Port au Prince area has been severely affected by gang activity.
More Struggles Within Haiti
Hunger. A country less than 1,000 miles away from the shores of the US, Haiti is #4 out of twenty-two countries on the World Food Program’s latest list of “Hunger Hotspots.” Over 220,000 people are predicted to die this year due to starvation.
Medical Care. Basic medical care is often unavailable as hospitals close because of the violence right outside their door or because they cannot obtain supplies and medication.
Violence. It is estimated that as high as 70% of Haitian women and girls have become victims of gender-based violence.
Education. And fewer than 50% of children in Haiti finish elementary school while only about 20% of Haitian kids receive a secondary education.
Apparent Project’s Sadness… Eltha’s Story
Recently, the Apparent Project has experienced devastation from the violence in Haiti.
Eltha, one of our teachers, is a new mom.
Several weeks ago, her husband went to the maché (market) to purchase supplies for their baby.
He was carrying the supplies home when he was shot and killed.
A gang member thought he was carrying cash. You can listen to Pierre, Apparent Project Director of Schools, talk about this horrific event here: https://youtu.be/Fy1rQ-mUyMk
Eltha lost her husband, and her 2-month old baby girl lost her dad.
She now has total responsibility for feeding her family and paying rent.
When you give to the Apparent Project, you are linking arms with her and with our other staff
to not only teach children, but you are also giving our staff the ability to provide for their greatest needs
through their salary rather than through charity.
