After more than a week of increasingly violent protests that left Port-au-Prince on lockdown, there is a pause. A moment to breathe. Mache owners set out their items for sale, women go to the market to try and purchase food for their families, children go to school. But it is far from back to normal life.
Tensions are still high, feelings of walking on eggshells and wondering what the next round of manifestations will look like and the lingering affects it will leave hang heavy in the air. The value of the Goude (Haitian currency) is still at an all time low, which means what little people had before doesn’t purchase as much. People are further in debt because they had to purchase food on credit while they were unable to work due to the protests, and less food is available since the farmers in the mountains haven’t been able to bring their fresh food to the city due to barricaded and blocked roads.
In this pause, many of the children and babies are at school and childcare at AP. They run and hug their teachers and nannies, grateful to see their smiling and welcoming faces. It is like a mini reunion. The Apparent Project has become more than a school or childcare. It has become a family. Teachers, nannies, guards, cleaning crew, students, infants and toddlers. These are the titles, but really they are friends, a tight knit community that cares about the well being of each other.
While stories of corruption continue to surface, children attempt to continue their studies of reading, math, and citizenship. Toddlers enjoy playing with their friends and favorite toys.
Please continue to join us in prayer for AP, our staff and students, the community of Delmas 75, Port-au-Prince, Haiti, and all levels of leadership and the government. May the voice of integrity, compassion, and courage be the loudest heard in the halls of the government and opposition. May Haiti rise stronger and more united, with visions of a thriving and successful country leading the way.
