In Haiti, graduating from Kindergarten is a really big deal!
The Kindergarten celebration is more important in their culture than any other school graduation. To me, it feels like it’s the end of one season of life for their children, and the beginner of another. At Apparent Project we’ve been blessed to watch infants become toddlers, toddlers become preschoolers, then preschoolers become our Kindergarten students.
Last year we were able to provide a “proper” Haitian Kindergarten celebration. There were many skits & dances, special clothing, a stage was built by one of our staff to provide a large platform for all the presentations. Parents were able to contribute some to offset the cost. It was celebrated in a way that honored the expectations of their culture. And Haitians love to celebrate. They love music & dance & decorations & laughter & FUN!
This year the celebratory atmosphere was evident, but the activities were limited due to increased danger in Haiti & financial limitations that Haitian parents & Apparent Project have been experiencing. However, each student was honored! Our amazing Kindergarten teacher was honored. Everyone had FUN!
6th Grade Completed – a New Season begins!
The first Apparent Project students to complete “elementary school!” They had FUN, too!
There isn’t an official graduation for 6th grade students in Haiti, but they will enter a new “season!” Haitian “middle school” begins in 7th grade. They will have a variety of teachers. for the next few years. In Haiti, the kids don’t move from class to class for each subject. Instead, different teachers show up to their classroom throughout the day. Apparent Project School is certified through 9th grade. The 9th grade is dedicated to review and preparation for the standard Haitian comprehensive exam that must be passed to enroll in high school.
We recently notified parents of our decision to add 7th grade this fall. The response… “All of them are happy! Some even making noise after knowing that we gonna have 7th grade. They are so happy.” They celebrated our decision!
We face challenges in Haiti. But challenges are also opportunities.
Opportunities to grow in character & faith, to develop new skills, to see the goodness of God as we experience His Presence, His power & His provision. We are blessed!
