During the past few days, we have shared the struggles of Haiti and of our Apparent Project staff. We have also shared the good work that our staff are doing and the current and future impact they are making in Haiti, even and perhaps especially, during this time of chaos and struggle. Today we want to share the beauty of Haiti and her people because we believe that God has a plan for Haiti and we believe that YOU will be blessed by coming alongside the Apparent Project to make a difference in Haiti.

Haiti is located on a tropical island in the Caribbean, just 600 miles off the coast of Florida, closer to the coast of Florida than Atlanta is. From the golden sandy beaches to the tropical rainforests, the ‘mountains beyond mountains’ to breathtaking waterfalls, cacti to tropical flowers, and evergreen trees to palm trees; Haiti has beautiful scenery.

Haitian art is known for its vibrant color and expressive design.

Farmers in Haiti grow some of the tastiest fruits in the world as well as vegetables, cocoa, rice, peanuts, sugar, and coffee. And over half of the world’s vetiver oil (an essential oil used in high-end perfumes) comes from Haiti.

The cuisine in Haiti is similar to food in the rest of the Caribbean but has its own delicious Haitian flair.

Music in Haiti is often heard coming from churches and parties and can even be heard on the streets. Kompa is a popular form of jazz-based dance music that originated in Haiti during the mid-twentieth century and remains popular in Haiti.

There are many Jesus-followers in Haiti and their faith is strong! They KNOW that their only hope is Jesus and they trust that He will provide for their needs even when it’s hard.

The staff and families we work with are loyal and smart, and they work hard to provide for their families. They are hospitable and will share whatever they have with family, friends, and even strangers. There have been several months during the past couple of years when our staff have not received their pay. We are working hard to catch up on the backpay, but it is a struggle. In addition, cost of living has increased drastically for our staff.  Gas is about $20/gallon and the cost of food, water, and other supplies has increased as well.

Like the rest of the staff, Pierre, our Apparent Project Director of Schools struggles, too!  He and his wife are currently unable to live in their own home because of security issues. So, he is paying extra rent. However, Pierre often shares the little he has with staff and students who need help.

Last summer, our school had a real Haitian graduation for the kindergarten class. The staff asked the parents to contribute for the expenses but only a few parents were able to pay. There wasn’t money in our AP budget for the event, so Pierre paid about $700 of his own money towards the celebration. He is truly an example of a godly man who is giving what little he has to show love to the children and families he serves.

Please consider setting up a recurring donation or giving a one-time gift to the Apparent Project.
