I don’t remember the first time I met Fabi (nickname for Fabiola) but it was when Zayden, her younger son was a baby! It’s been a while.
Fabi is married to Zidor, who has been managing AP Haiti staff & programs since 2014. I attended their wedding in 2016 but started to get to know Fabi on a beach trip with the AP Haiti leaders. I told Z to bring his wife and kids. It was natural for me to include them but was a welcome surprise & a treat for Fabi & the kids! It became the norm, and I loved it! Their 2 boys (Zion & Zayden) liked the ride & loved playing in the sand & water. Zion & Zayden often fell asleep in my lap on the drive to the beach!
It was after they moved to an apartment across the road from AP that I was able to get to know Fabi better. I was invited to have a Haitian dinner at their home. Fabi is a fabulous cook! I was eager to be invited again!. But it wasn’t just the dinner… it was also having time to “talk” to Fabi. She didn’t speak English & I don’t speak Kreyol. But that didn’t prevent communication.
I asked her about her dreams. During that conversation, I asked if she would like to learn some English. Her eyes lit up, and she smiled her amazing smile! YES!! And she would love to learn how to use a computer! I told her she could learn at AP! She was excited, such an eager student! She was determined!!!
It became obvious that if you gave Fabi an opportunity, she would take it! She would work at it whole-heartedly!
The result…. She eventually was hired as a preschool assistant, then as an elementary school assistant teacher. Fabi is now our 2nd grade teacher! She has also completed 2 years of the 3-year Haitian Teacher training program and won the top student award during her 1st year. She’ll receive her teacher certificate by next summer!
Fabi is a great example of why Apparent Project is serving in Haiti! We “grow” people by providing opportunities! They need to work in order to grow, but the door is open for each of them to discover & become more of who they were created to be. I’m so proud of Fabi!
Fabi shares…
Are you happy working at AP? Yes! Why? Loves the job, the kids & loves teaching!
What do you enjoy about your job? Making plans, applying the teaching techniques and methods of teaching… then seeing the results.
What is your dream? My dream was to work in accounting or as a florist, but I discovered that teaching is my passion. “It’s in my blood!”
What do you love about Haiti?
The FOOD! (Lalo – spinach & rice with beef or crab).
The Beach, the Mountains… and the Haitian Festivals.
Prayer requests
Protection for the family & for Haiti. Also, that she would grow more spiritually.
