Ending Poverty; The Apparent Way

Ending Poverty; The Apparent Way

Childcare for at-risk babies sets the stage. Preschool opens the curtains. Manager training turns on the light. Now the story can be told. And what a powerful story it is; empowerment of Haitian families to rise out of poverty, disrupting the cycle, and changing the trajectory of the next generation. Thank you to Mrs. Green’s World for hosting our Director, Marilyn Monaghan and allowing her to share history, stories, and inspiration about all that ApParent Project is doing. It is quite a feat to rise out of poverty, and cannot be done

It’s not Easy

It’s not Easy

Having been involved in working for organizations in Haiti in some way shape or form for the last 11 years, there is something that I’ve learned…… Life and caring about kids and making a difference for someone in a crisis is so time consuming that it is really hard to step back and see the whole picture. It is really hard to see the bigger reasons behind poverty if you are struggling every day to help someone put food on the table so they stay alive. It is really hard to see

You said “Yes!”

You said “Yes!”

I remember sitting around the table in Haiti with Cami and Marilyn on May 1 and Marilyn was telling us about “She is Priceless.”    We thought it sounded like a great idea and it would be a wonderful thing, but only 16 days?   Gulp…… So, Cami and I put our heads together (well, not literally) and came up with some ideas on how to get the message out to you.  We needed to show you the difference you are making and the difference you can make. We needed you to

Mercy House Global, Ann Voskamp and The Apparent Project

Mercy House Global, Ann Voskamp and The Apparent Project

If you are anything like me (and hopefully you aren’t!) you probably have heard of Ann Voskamp way more than you have Mercy House Global or The Apparent Project. That’s the really cool thing that God’s up to with this She is Priceless Day of Giving.   Mercy House is doing it, it is pulling in one of their supporters and a VERY big name, Ann Voskamp, and it doesn’t benefit Mercy House at all. Well, I guess it does in the sense that they are one of the 9 organizations

“For Crying Out Loud…..”

“For Crying Out Loud…..”

I have a confession to make……. Okay, not really, but I do have a statement to make…… Ann Voskamp is one of the writers who speaks to my soul.   She knows where it’s at.   She knows where God is at and she can speak to the pain that often comes when you attempt to balance life with listening to where God is. And it’s an honor to say that Ann wrote about the campaign that The Apparent Project is part of.   Actually, she invited the founder of Mercy House Gloobal

Yesterday, Tomorrow and the Future

Yesterday, Tomorrow and the Future

So, it’s Monday. That means that yesterday was Sunday. But not just any Sunday. In the United States, yesterday was Mother’s Day. It’s a day where we are supposed to do what we do normally every day. Be grateful for our mothers and the mothers of our children. That’s not too hard, is it? In some cases it can be. It can be very difficult. But that’s not why I’m writing you now. I’m writing you because there is a logical progression from yesterday through tomorrow and into the future. Yesterday, a

It’s About the Little Girls

It’s About the Little Girls

Okay, do me a favor…… Imagine in your own mind the picture of the most adorable little girl you know. A bounce in her step. A smile on her face. Cute dimples, adorable eyes that draw you in and you can’t help but smile. Now do me a favor – and this one is harder……. Walk down the road in Port Au Prince Haiti with me. It’s hot. Really hot. You can’t hardly look up because you run the risk of either stepping in something “unsavory” or twisting your ankle on a

She is Priceless – a Chance to Prove It

There has been a statistic that has always bothered me.   It was the one that showed that women were significantly more likely to be abused, to be assaulted, to live in poverty, to not get an education……. I have four daughters.   That’s just not fair. I spent last week in Haiti and spent a good bit of that time with women who are no longer at risk.   They have been given the opportunity to rise up.   They have been given the opportunity to see that they are pearls.

Where’s Tom Been?

Where’s Tom Been?

Most of you probably haven’t even noticed, but I’ve been a bit absent the last 3 weeks.  Unfortunately, there has been a not so good reason for that.   My Dad is undergoing chemo as he fights pancreatic cancer.   To say that the chemo has been hard on him would be an understatement. Well, three weeks ago, my Mom fell and broke multiple ribs in multiple places.    Yeah, ouch…….. So the three weeks, life has been a zoo and caring for my parents has taken up every single spare moment

Worthless

Worthless

A few years ago,  I had the wonderful opportunity to speak at the Clay County Women’s Club.  They invited me to come, set up my jewelry, join them for lunch and share all about Apparent Project.  I am always excited to be a part of things like this and have had several opportunities in the past several years.  I just giggle half the time because who but God would imagine that I would be the “Guest Speaker” at all these different events? Before it was my turn to speak, the meeting was
