Haitian Metal Art
Haiti has long been known for the metal art of the artisans' village at Croix-des-Bouquets. Since the 1950's Haitians have been flattening 55 gallon oil drums and using these steel canvasas to cut, pierce, and bend intricate images and sculptures. The Apparent Project has collaborated with some of Croix-des-Bouquets' finest metal artisans in custom designing a new line of recycled metal art.
Journal Making
One of our most exciting products has emerged as a bridge between our work with recycled paper and the recycled metal art of Croix-des-Bouquets. We started with several young men who were struggling to be able to pay for school and taught them the art of making paper by hand. They use recycled materials to make the journal papers, with many of the scraps coming from the paper beadmaking process. Our partner artisans in Croix De Bouquet then create beautiful handmade steel journal covers. Our artisans then bind the handmade paper into these metal works of art, creating unique, durable, and beautiful journals available for sale at jewelry parties or through retail stores.
